ISIS For IPv6 Configuration

Example on Cisco IOS

In this Cisco ISIS for IPv6 configuration example, we will configure ISIS with IPv6 extension configuration commands.

For our example we will use the below four-routered topology. Here, we will have 3 different area. There is a Single Topology and Multi-Topology configurations with ISIS for IPv6. We will give an example to Multi-Topology here.

isis topology ipcisco

Let’s start the ISIS for IPv6 configuration.

Firstly, we will enable IPv6 routing on each routers. We will do this with “ipv6 unicast-routing” command.

Router A # config terminal
Router A (config) # ipv6 unicast-routing

Router B # config terminal
Router B (config) # ipv6 unicast-routing

Router C # config terminal
Router C (config) # ipv6 unicast-routing

Router D # config terminal
Router D (config) # ipv6 unicast-routing

Now, IPv6 routing is enabled on each router. It is time to configure router ISIS process. Here, we will use a name for ISIS process. This name is “ABC”. Beside, we will give net addresses to the interface and we will configure the router global level.

By the way, let’s remember the router levels with a shape.

isis-router-types-ipcisco

Router A (config) # router isis ABC
Router A (config-rtr)# net 49.0000.0000.0000.AAAA.00
Router A (config-rtr)# is-type level-2-only

Router B (config) # router isis ABC
Router B (config-rtr)# net 50.0000.0000.0000.BBBB.00
Router B (config-rtr)# is-type level-2-only

Router C (config) # router isis ABC
Router C (config-rtr)# net 51.0000.0000.0000.CCCC.00
Router C (config-rtr)# is-type level-1-2

Router D (config) # router isis ABC
Router D (config-rtr)# net 51.0000.0000.0000.DDDD.00
Router D (config-rtr)# is-type level-1-2

isis-for-ipv6-topology

Under routere ISIS level we will configure address-family ipv6”. Under this we will add the command multi-topology” to support multi-topology.

Router A (config) # router isis ABC
Router A (config-rtr)# address-family ipv6
Router A (config-rtr-af)# multi-topology

Router B (config) # router isis ABC
Router B (config-rtr)# address-family ipv6
Router B (config-rtr-af)# multi-topology

Router C (config) # router isis ABC
Router C (config-rtr)# address-family ipv6
Router C (config-rtr-af)# multi-topology

Router D (config) # router isis ABC
Router D (config-rtr)# address-family ipv6
Router D (config-rtr-af)# multi-topology

For Interface configurations, we will use the below IPv6 addresses. We will also enable the interfaces for IPv6 addresses.

After IPv6 address configuration, we will add the router interfaces ISIS for IPv6.

Router A (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router A (config-if)# ipv6 enable
Router A (config-if)# ipv6 address 2001:AAAA::1/64
Router A (config-if)# no shutdown
Router A (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router A (config-if)# ipv6 enable
Router A (config-if)# ipv6 address 2001:BBBB::1/64
Router A (config-if)# no shutdown

Router B (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router B (config-if)# ipv6 enable
Router B (config-if)# ipv6 address 2001:AAAA::2/64
Router B (config-if)# no shutdown
Router B (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router B (config-if)# ipv6 enable
Router B (config-if)# ipv6 address 2001:CCCC::1/64
Router B (config-if)# no shutdown

Router C (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router C (config-if)# ipv6 enable
Router C (config-if)# ipv6 address 2001:DDDD::1/64
Router C (config-if)# no shutdown
Router C (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router C (config-if)# ipv6 enable
Router C (config-if)# ipv6 address 2001:BBBB::2/64
Router C (config-if)# no shutdown

Router D (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router D (config-if)# ipv6 enable
Router D (config-if)# ipv6 address 2001:DDDD::2/64
Router D (config-if)# no shutdown
Router D (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router D (config-if)# ipv6 enable
Router D (config-if)# ipv6 address 2001:CCCC::2/64
Router D (config-if)# no shutdown

After this configuration, we will configure each interface that will be under the ISIS process. Here, we will again use the same isis process name , “ABC”.

Router A (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router A (config-if)# ipv6 router isis ABC
Router A (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router A (config-if)# ipv6 router isis ABC

Router B (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router B (config-if)# ipv6 router isis ABC
Router B (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router B (config-if)# ipv6 router isis ABC

Router C (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router C (config-if)# ipv6 router isis ABC
Router C (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router C (config-if)# ipv6 router isis ABC

Router D (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router D (config-if)# ipv6 router isis ABC
Router D (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router D (config-if)# ipv6 router isis ABC

Lastly, let’s confgure the metric value. We will also use “metric-style wide” command to support wide metrics . This command can be used with additional parameters also. These parameters can be “transition” and the level information like “level-1, level-2,level-1-2”. In the following articles you can find the detailed information about these additional parameters.

Router A (config) # router isis ABC
Router A (config-rtr)# metric-style wide

Router B (config) # router isis ABC
Router B (config-rtr)# metric-style wide

Router C (config) # router isis ABC
Router C (config-rtr)# metric-style wide

Router D (config) # router isis ABC
Router D (config-rtr)# metric-style wide

Router A (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router A (config-if)# isis ipv6 metric 30
Router A (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router A (config-if)# isis ipv6 metric 30

Router B (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router B (config-if)# isis ipv6 metric 30
Router B (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router B (config-if)# isis ipv6 metric 30

Router C (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router C (config-if)# isis ipv6 metric 30
Router C (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router C (config-if)# isis ipv6 metric 30

Router D (config) # interface serial 0/0/0
Router D (config-if)# isis ipv6 metric 30
Router D (config-if) # interface serial 0/0/1
Router D (config-if)# isis ipv6 metric 30

Now, it is time to verification. To verify our ISIS for IPv6 configuration example, you can use the below commands:

• show ipv6 protocols
• show isis ABC ipv6 topology
• show isis ABC ipv6 database
• show isis ipv6 rib
