In this Cisco DHCP Packet Tracer Example, we will focus on Packet Tracer DHCP Relay Agent Configuration. Here, we will configure a DHCP server and we will use this DHCP server in multiple networks. For our packet tracer configuration, we will use one router and two switcehs with connected PCs. We will configure a separate DHCP Server here and by configuring DHCP Relay Agent, we will use this DHCP Server for another subnet.
Normally, CCNA students learn that, routers do not forward broadcasts. Here, we will see that they will. By using “ip-helper address“, and configuring DHCP Relay agent, routers can forward broadcast packets. For relay agent config, the key command is “ip-helper address” command. On different interfaces of the router, in each subnet that we use this DHCP Server, we will use this command with the ip address of DHCP Server. For detailed explanation, you can also view other DHCP Packet Tracer Configuration Lesson.

In another lesson, we have learned how to configure a Cisco router as a DHCP Server. You can also check that lesson to learn more on how to configure Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol on Cisco devices. In that lesson, we have configured a Cisco router as a DHCP Server and it has distributed ip addresses to DHCP Clients. Here, we have configured a separate server as DHCP Server. And this server has distributed ip addresses to the clients in both the clients in the same network and the clients in another network with the help of ip-helper address.
