IPv6 Configuration

ipcisco-Cisco-ipv6-Configuration-example

In this Packet Tracer IPv6 Configuration Examle, we will configure Cisco router interfaces with IPv6 addresses. For our IPv6 configuration example, we will use Cisco Packet Tracer simulation program. Here, we will use a simple topology on the screen consist of two routers. We will configure ipv6 addresses on the interfacesd of these Cisco routers.

In this Packet Tracer IPv6 Configuration Example, we will do the below configurations:

  • IPv6 Link Local Address Configuration
  • IPv6 Global Unicast Address Configuration
  • IPv6 Addressing Verification, IPv6 Ping

IPv6 addresses are very important in today’s network. Because of the exhaustion of IPv4 address, today and in the future, IPv6 addresses will be used more. So, learning how to configure Cisco IPv6 Address configuration is very important for a network engineer. Here, with the help of Cisco packet tracer, we will focus on this lesson.

You can also check written lesson of Packet Tracer IPv6 Configuration to see  all the commands detally.

Let’s also see what we will do in this lesson detaily.

Firstly, we will answer how to configure IPv6 Global Unicast address question and we will configure Global Unicast IPv6 address on wach router interface. To do this, we will use “ipv6 address ipv6-prefix eui-64” command.

Secondly, we will answer how to set Link-Local IPv6 address packet tracer question and we will configure IPv6 Link-Local addresses on both router interface. Here,  we will use “ipv6 address ipv6-link-local-address link-local” command.

Then, we will enable IPv6 address on each interface with “ipv6 enable” command. This is a command used under the interface.

After that, we will will enter the most important command in this IPv6 packet tracer configuration. It is “ipv6 unicast-routing“. With “ipv6 unicast-routing” command, we will enable IPv6 routing globally.

One more imporant thing in IPv6 configuration is CEF (Cisco Express Forwarding). CEF must be enabled for IPv6. By default it is enabled. If it is not enables, you can enable it with Cisco “ip cef” command under the global configuration mode.  CEF is a layer 3 ip switching technology for the forwaridng of IPv6 packets.

To verify ipv6 address configuration, we can use the “show ipv6 interface brief” Cisco IPv6 verification command. We can also use ping with the ipv6 address of the other end by entering also outour interface. With this method, we can check the connectivity.

After completing this lesson, you can continue with the other Packet Tracer IPv6 Configuration examples to practice IPv6 more.
