DHCP Configuration On Huawei Routers

In this DHCP example we will configure a Huawei Router as a DHCP Server. After the configuration, a host device, here a PC, will receive its IP information from DHCP Server Huawei Router.

For our DHCP configuration example, we will use the topology below:

huawei-dhcp-configuration-example

Let’s firstly talk about the DHCP Confiugration steps on the Huawei Router. We will do the below steps one by one:

1.Enabling DHCP
2.DHCP IP Pool Configuration
3.DNS Configuration
4.Interface DHCP Configuration
5.DHCP Verification
6.DHCP Client Configuration

Enabling DHCP

By default, DHCP is not enabled on Huawei Routers. So, the first step of configuring a Huawei Router as DHCP Server is enabling DHCP on the router.

< Huawei - Router>system-view
[Huawei – Router] dhcp enable

DHCP IP Pool Configuration

Here, we will configure the IP Pool on Huawei Router. Our IP allocations will be done from this IP Pool.

Two different IP Pool can be defined :

• Interface Pool
• Global Pool

In Global IP Pool configuration, firstly, we will configure the IP Pool range. After this we will configure a gateway address. This gateway address is the address of Huawei Router for local network devices. Lastly, we will give a lease time. This lease time is the time limit that DHCP Client can use this IP address.

[Huawei – Router]ip pool OurPool
[Huawei – Router-ip-pool-OurPool]network 192.168.0.0 mask 24
[Huawei – Router- ip-pool-OurPool] gateway-list 192.168.0.1
[Huawei – Router- ip-pool-OurPool] lease day 2 day hour 18

DHCP DNS Configuration

DNS information is also provided from the DHCP Server. To get this information from DHCP Server, we will configure Huawei Router, with DNS commands.

Here, firstly, we will configure the DNS IP address and then we will exclude this address from the IP Pool.

[Huawei – Router] interface GigabitEthernet1/1/1
[Huawei – Router- GigabitEthernet1/1/1]dhcp server dns-list 192.168.0.254
[Huawei – Router- GigabitEthernet1/1/1]dhcp server excluded-ip-address 192.168.0.254

Interface DHCP Configuration

In the interface configuration, we will make this interface to receive information from DHCP Server. Here, we can select two way:

• Using Interface Pool
• Using Global Pool

To use Interface IP Pool we will use “dhcp select interface” command, under the interface.
To use Global IP Pool wewill use “dhcp select global” command, under the interface.

We will do this with “dhcp select interface” command under the interface. We will also no shut our interface.

[Huawei – Router] interface GigabitEthernet1/1/1
[Huawei – Router- GigabitEthernet1/1/1] dhcp select interface
[Huawei – Router- GigabitEthernet1/1/1] undo shutdown

OR

[Huawei – Router] interface GigabitEthernet1/1/1
[Huawei – Router- GigabitEthernet1/1/1] dhcp select global
[Huawei – Router- GigabitEthernet1/1/1] undo shutdown

DHCP Verification

To verify the DHCP Configuration on Huawei Router, we can use the below commands. With this commands we can see our whole DHCP configuration and the in

display current-configuration

display ip pool name OurPool

display ip pool interface GigabitEthernet1/1/1

display ip pool interface

display dhcp server statistics

DHCP Client Configuration

At the DHCP Client side, at PC, we will select auto IP configuration to get IP address from the DHCP. We will do this in the classical IP configuration panel of the PC.

After this process, in a short time, PC will get an IP address from the configured DHCP IP Pool. This will be the frist available IP address in the DHCP IP Pool. So, our PC’s IP address will be 192.168.0.2.
